Oedipus the King or Oedipus Rex unfolds a murder mystery and a political thriller with the emphasizing on element of irony on a man who determines to search, hunt down and punish a murderer who turns out to be himself. In my opinion, Sophocles's Oedipus Rex is probably the most famous tragedy ever written. In the play, Oedipus, King of Thebes, upon hearing that his city is being ravaged by plague, sends his brother-in-law Creon to learn what to do from the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi. When Creon returns, he brings the news that in order to save Thebes. they have to hunt down the murderer of Laius, the former king of Thebes. Oedipus begins investigating the death of his predecessor, Laius, and discovers through various means that he himself was the one who had unknowingly killed Laius and then bed his own mother, Jocasta. Jocasta commits suicide, Oedipus blinds himself, takes leave of his children, and is led away. From this, FATE becomes the theme of the story where form the beginning of the story, Oedipus is destined to kill his father and mate his mother. He runs from Corinth thinking of avoiding his fate and proceeds to Thebes and kills his father not knowingly. Riddle of Sphinx, he solves and married his mother he does. Teiresias's prophecy, he rejects and mocks, only then finds out he shares the wedding bed in holy matrimony.
